Plurality: The Future of Collaborative Technology and Democracy is a book by Audrey Tang and E. Glen Weyl that explores how digital technology can be designed to recognize, honor, and bridge social differences rather than ignore or inflame them.
Drawing on principles from network science, mechanism design, and Taiwan's pioneering digital democracy experiments, the book presents a vision of technology that supports collaboration across diversity. It argues that the greatest potential of technology lies not in replacing human judgment with artificial intelligence, but in augmenting the collective intelligence of diverse communities.
The Authors
Audrey Tang
Audrey Tang served as Taiwan's first Digital Minister from 2016 to 2024, where she led groundbreaking initiatives in civic technology and digital democracy. A self-taught programmer who became a successful entrepreneur before turning to public service, Tang is internationally recognized for developing tools that strengthen democratic participation, including the vTaiwan platform for consensus-building and the award-winning COVID-19 response systems.
E. Glen Weyl
E. Glen Weyl is a political economist and social technologist. He is the founder of the Plurality Institute and RadicalxChange Foundation. Previously a researcher at Microsoft Research, Weyl's work focuses on designing technology and institutions that transform conflict into cooperation. He is co-author of Radical Markets and a leading voice in the movement for technology that serves democratic values.
